The river originates approximately 90 kilometers east of the Melbourne central business district and flows towards it and out into Port Phillip Bay. Outside of Melbourne, settlement in the Yarra Valley represented a very significant segment in the history and economic development of the state of Victoria. - Being on the route to the goldfields of Warburton during the 1850s and with the main traffic path in the state, the Yarra River, being at the center of the timber industry during the 1890s, the Yarra Valley developed as the primary food production region for Melbourne. The Yarra Valley was Victoria’s first wine-growing district – with a history stretching back nearly 180 years. Vines were first planted in 1838 by the Ryrie brothers on their property, now known as Chateau Yering. - Viticulture spread rapidly through the 1860s and 1870s, led by early settlers, including the de Castella and de Pury families, who were exporting local wines to the British and European markets and winning awards around the world. However, the increased demand for fortified wine led to the cessation of Yarra Valley wine production in 1921. Replanting began in the late 1960s, and by the early 1990s, the area under vine passed the high point of the 19th century. - We first visit Rayner’s Orchard. Len and Heather bought a 37.5-acre bush block in 1977 and started the Rayner’s Orchard when their plan of running a few cows was unfeasible. Rayner’s Orchard is a family-run, boutique fruit orchard in the Yarra Valley. They grow over 450 varieties of fruit, including peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, tamarillos, pomegranates, persimmons, figs, pepinos, feijoas, guavas, kiwi fruit, Dutch medlars, and various citrus fruits throughout the winter. - Taste the many varieties of fruit available in the orchard! - They run Fruit Tasting Tractor Tours around the farm all year – jump on to sample the freshest fruit you will ever taste – tree-ripened fruit picked straight from the tree! Tours run daily on demand during business hours and run for an hour each – lots of fruit samples included as you make your way around the little plot of ” fruit heaven “!
